Excellence is Habit: Wisdon, Wit, and Advice from a Theatre Teacher & Director
Mason HS When recalling working with, or talking to, Billy and Annie for the first time, the first words that come to mind are authentic, passionate, experienced and invested. This is a power couple that truly cares about the art of theatre and its growth in ALL schools from 1A to 6A sizes. At clinic, Billy is hands-on, getting kids on their feet, throwing out exercises that spur and invigorate students. There are no airs about Billy and Annie; they are kind and respectful of the various challenges facing directors in different schools. Their knowledge is incomparable; I wish I could mind-meld with them to gain their wealth of understanding! -- Jacki Maenius - Director at Mason High School
Two words come to mind when I think of my colleagues and friends Billy and Annie Dragoo. Excellence and Enjoyment. From having Billy out to do our annual One Act Play clinic, the wonderful workshops they do at our conventions, to the amazing shows I have seen at Austin High School those two thoughts permeate my relationship with them. I know I’m a better director and educator because of time spent with them. And if you ever get a chance to go to a baseball game with Billy, or talk musical theatre with Annie, you should definitely make the most of those enjoyable and excellent opportunities. ~ Chuck Harris - Liberty Hill High School
Billy and Annie Dragoo inspired a passion for educational Theatre that infected the bus driver! There is no greater legacy that we can leave as educators than a positive impact on the lives of our students. Through their work as clinicians and mentors, this has quite literally been the case for hundreds of kids in my small town including my own children, one of whom is now a Theatre educator. I was first impacted by Billy and Annie when I was asked to direct UIL One Act Play in my very small conference 1A school. We were invited to attend a clinic with Annie and Billy in 2005. It was in that clinic that my students, me, and my husband, who drove us there, all embraced the incredible challenge and responsibility of truthful storytelling. We were hooked! They inspired in us a partnership that has changed the lives of students in Mount Enterprise, Texas, for almost two decades. They have always been willing to be incredible resources. They have encouraged us every year, and every step of the way. They have pushed us to grow. Annie encouraged us to try Musical Theatre in a tiny high school because she had faith we could provide our kids that opportunity. We have always been able to rely on Billy and Annie to encourage our growth and development as directors and educators. They have always stopped to provide help, answer questions or just cheerlead when we needed it most. They are always available, kind, real, and they love kids. They are committed to helping teachers provide the very best experiences possible in order to nurture the talents of their students. They have never stopped sharing their expertise in clinics, workshops, professional conventions, and more.
Billy and Annie have helped grow and encourage young artists like my daughter. She is now a first year teacher. Billy and Annie were her clinicians when she was a student. Billy was her clinician when she began directing this year. Her students are successfully telling their story. This passion for this amazing art is growing in a whole new group of kids because Billy and Annie have never stopped caring about growing our storytellers. ~ Kimberly & John Fryman, Mt. Enterprise High School
